In the small town of Parkdale, the unexpected view of a dark wall of lava known as the Parkdale Lava Flow is a surprise to even longtime Oregonians. By not subsiding, the flow does not expose the column of lava that makes up a lava tree. The liquid lava flowing beneath a thin, still-plastic crust drags and wrinkles it into tapestry-like folds and rolls resembling twisted rope. Magma may have reached very high up in the Earth’s crust, according to Iceland ’s meteorological office, which says people will have to “wait in suspense for the next few days” to see how events play out. If lava flows and domes break apart, gravity may cause the material to flow rapidly downhill to form these avalanches of hot rock and gas. Blend until smooth.
